The largest historical dome in the world and the fourth largest church in the world (Santa Maria del Fiore), the Cathedral of Florence, contains more than 4,000,000,000 bricks made of Impruneta terracotta. Each of these brick is unique and made from the same material and with same manufacturing techniques as our terracotta.
Furthermore, the properties of this terracotta are still used in the construction of residences, churches, villas, planters for gardens and parks.
A unique proof of the elegance, robustness, durability and weather resistance of this elementary material.
Nowadays, the properties of this terracotta are still used in the construction of residences, churches, villas, planters for gardens and parks.
Timeless styles - modern lines - unique designs that can be encountered in never-ending variations in a wide range of environments. Beautiful and fascinating!
The perfect harmony of the four natural elements is what makes this terracotta to the most unique in the world - These are the elements that define our beautiful earth.
"Earth - Water - Air - Fire"
These four basic elements together define the working phases for the production of this unique terracotta.
The high-quality earth is first finely ground and then kneaded by adding water (Impastatura). The pure earth is refined in its natural state in the next processing steps, i.e. without the addition of resins or residual oil inclusions (purely biological | free of synthetical or chemical pollutants), which can damage sensitive plants - as in the case of some machine-made products.
Our Impruneta Terracotta is, besides other inimitably things, produced in a food-safe way for the fermentation of high-quality wines or for the storage of olive oil - protecting resources and manufactured sustainably by hand according to old traditions. With this natural production basis, this terracotta is particularly ideal for people with allergies!
The clay is then modelled. There are different traditional hand techniques used, which give each of these unique pieces its characteristic charm, texture and irregularity.
The build-up of the jars, pots and masterpieces are done by hand - not on a turntable as usual in other areas.
Each handwidth is formed centimetre by centimetre spirally into height (Colombino). The potter turns around the vessel, pot or jar and - following the antique tradition - models the small clay sausages together seamlessly (lucignoli). Each terracotta is made individually and lovingly by hand.
The finished unique model is then ready for the gentle and long drying phase. All the water bound in the clay evaporates slowly and the size of the vessel decreases by about 10%. Several very complex challenges - the drying process depends on the seasons and the ambient temperature/humidity conditions which are permanently changing.
The artworks and vessels are now fired.
The firing process is carried out at a constant temperature of more than 1000°C with the closed kiln and until the kiln has cooled down completely.
After this intense firing phase of more than 3 days (approx. 75 hours) and the complete cooling of at least another 36 hours, all the pieces are bathed in water again.
These processes, which are coordinated in detail, give our terracotta an unlimited lifetime and guarantee high resistance to climatic conditions such as temperature fluctuations, frost and salty air. A masterpiece for ever!
